Day 1: Depart home country
Overnight or connecting flight to Rome. Begin reading the lives of Peter, Paul and Francis to frame the week.
Opening prayer of intention for the pilgrimage at the gate.
Day 2: Arrive Rome
Arrive at Fiumicino, transfer into the city and settle in. A gentle orientation walk introduces Rome's rhythm; keep the first evening light. Early night to recover.
Evening Mass and a blessing to open the pilgrimage.
Day 3: Vatican City — St Peter's & the Museums
The cornerstone day. The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel deserve a full three to four hours; then St Peter's Basilica with Michelangelo's Pietà and Bernini's baldachin over the Apostle's tomb. Climb the dome if energy allows. Book timed entries to skip the worst lines.

Day 4: Papal Rome — the major basilicas
Trace the pilgrim's path of the four papal basilicas: St John Lateran (the cathedral of Rome) and its Holy Stairs, St Mary Major, and St Paul Outside the Walls over the Apostle's tomb. Each merits 45–60 minutes. If a Wednesday, attend the Papal Audience.
Climb the Holy Stairs (Scala Sancta) on the knees in prayer; Mass at St Mary Major.
Day 5: Ancient & Christian Rome
The Colosseum and Roman Forum (a half day), where early Christians witnessed to their faith, and the Catacombs on the Appian Way — the underground tombs of the martyrs. The catacombs are cool and moving; allow an hour with a guide.
Reflection and prayer for the martyrs in the catacombs; optional Mass in a catacomb chapel.
Day 6: Rome to Assisi
Morning drive north to Umbria (about 2.5 hours). Enter the walled hill town of Assisi: the Basilica of St Francis with Giotto's frescoes and the saint's tomb in the crypt. Let the afternoon unfold slowly — Assisi's peace is the point.
Mass at the tomb of St Francis; time for personal prayer in the lower basilica.
Day 7: Assisi — Francis & Clare
A full day in Assisi: the Basilica of St Clare with the San Damiano crucifix, the Hermitage (Eremo delle Carceri) in the woods above town where Francis prayed, and the Porziuncola inside St Mary of the Angels on the plain. Wear good shoes for the steep lanes.
Pray the Peace Prayer of St Francis at San Damiano; quiet hour at the Hermitage.
Day 8: Assisi & departure
A final morning for unhurried prayer or the local market, then transfer to Rome's airport for the journey home (allow ample buffer for the drive).
Closing Mass in Assisi and a Franciscan blessing before departure.
