Chartres Cathedral

Chartres, France

"The most perfect Gothic cathedral in existence"

About Chartres Cathedral

Considered by many scholars and pilgrims to be the supreme masterpiece of Gothic architecture, Chartres Cathedral was largely built between 1194 and 1220. Its near-original state, extraordinary stained glass (over 150 windows), Marian labyrinth, and the Sancta Camisia — the veil believed worn by the Virgin Mary at the Annunciation — make it uniquely sacred.

Pilgrimage Highlights

  • 1The Sancta Camisia — the Virgin's veil (given by Charlemagne)
  • 2176 stained-glass windows — the finest medieval glass in existence
  • 3The Labyrinth — 13th-century meditation walk (13 metres diameter)
  • 4Two asymmetrical towers — 500 years apart in construction
  • 5UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979
