What to seek out, and why it matters

I
Prayer centre

The Provincial House Chapel

The chapel dedicated to Mary Help of Christians (the primary Marian title of the Salesian tradition) and to Don Bosco is the devotional centre of the provincial house. The Salesian combination of popular devotion, joyful prayer, and practical ministry is felt in the atmosphere of the chapel.

II
Inside the chapel

The Image of Don Bosco

The statue or image of Don Bosco — typically depicted with the street boys of Turin, or with the young Dominic Savio — is the focus of Salesian devotion. Pilgrims pray here for their children, for young people in difficulty, for Don Bosco's intercession in educational and vocational matters.

III
Provincial house grounds

The Salesian Youth Ministry Context

The provincial house grounds typically include facilities for Salesian youth activities — oratory programmes, technical training, and formation events. The Salesian method (the Preventive System) — based on reason, religion, and loving kindness rather than punishment — is visible in the atmosphere of the compound.

IV
City context

The Bangalore Catholic Educational Network

Bangalore's Catholic educational institutions — many of them Salesian, Jesuit, or run by other congregations — are among the most respected in the city. Don Bosco schools and colleges across the city are part of the context for the provincial house, whose work shapes the education of tens of thousands of young people.

The Feast of Don Bosco (January 31)

The feast of Don Bosco on January 31 is the great Salesian celebration — celebrated with Mass, cultural programmes, and youth events across all Salesian institutions. At the provincial house, the feast is celebrated with particular solemnity. Old Boys of Don Bosco schools across south India often return on this day.

5Reflection & Prayer

Don Bosco met a boy in prison in Turin in 1841 — Bartolomeo Garelli, 16 years old, from the countryside, in the city alone, unable to read, locked up for stealing. Don Bosco asked to teach him catechism. From that single encounter grew the Salesian Congregation. He said: I have promised God that even my last breath shall be for my poor boys. The Salesians in Bangalore — running schools, technical colleges, and youth ministries for hundreds of thousands of young people across south India — are fulfilling that promise.

Mark 10:14

When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

A Pilgrim's Prayer

Don Bosco, you found Jesus in the street boys of Turin and spent your life bringing them together. Let me see what you saw: that the kingdom belongs to the young, the poor, the uneducated, the ones nobody else has time for. And let me do what you did: do not hinder them. Make room. Be present. Teach what I know. Amen.
