03Must See

What to seek out, and why it matters

I
Programme context

The Tabor Transfiguration Experience

The Tabor retreat is structured around the Transfiguration narrative: the disciples on the mountain, the transformation of Jesus before their eyes, the voice from the cloud, the falling face-down on the ground, the touch of Jesus saying Get up, do not be afraid. The retreat invites the participant into each stage of this encounter: the climb, the vision, the overwhelming, the touch, the courage to rise and return.

II
The city around the ashram

The Mumbai Urban Context

The Tabor Ashram in Mumbai stands in tension with its urban environment. The city of 20 million people — with its noise, its traffic, its relentless pressure, and its extraordinary vitality — surrounds the retreat space. The retreat at Tabor is an act of deliberate withdrawal from Mumbai's intensity, creating the quiet in which the voice of God can be heard.

III
Retreat participants

The Diverse Mumbai Catholic Community

The Catholic community of Mumbai is one of the most diverse in India: Latin Rite Catholics from the Konkan coast, Syro-Malabar Catholics from Kerala, Goan Catholics, Mangalorean Catholics, and immigrant Catholics from across India. The Tabor retreat draws from all these communities, creating a gathering that reflects the full breadth of Indian Catholicism.

IV
During retreats

The Charismatic Retreat Format

The Tabor Ashram's charismatic retreat format — with daily Mass, adoration, praise and worship, Scripture teaching, and personal prayer ministry — is the standard format of the Indian Catholic charismatic renewal. The particular contribution of the Tabor framework is the Transfiguration theology that frames the encounter.

V
At the end of the retreat

The Return from Tabor

After the Transfiguration, Jesus and the three disciples came down from the mountain immediately to continue the ministry. The descent is as important as the ascent. The Tabor retreat experience is designed not to produce contemplatives who stay on the mountain, but disciples who come down from the Tabor moment with the courage and clarity to continue their ministry in the world below.

5Reflection & Prayer

Peter wanted to build three shelters and stay on the mountain. Jesus said no. They came down and immediately met a boy with an evil spirit whom the disciples below had been unable to heal. The mountain experience was given so that they could do better in the valley. The Transfiguration is not an invitation to withdraw from the world — it is an equipping for deeper engagement with it. The retreatant who goes to Tabor and stays there has missed the point. The retreatant who comes back changed, with new eyes and new courage, has found it.

Matthew 17:2

There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.

A Pilgrim's Prayer

Transfigure me. I have come to Tabor. I have made the climb. I am here, with the three disciples, looking at what is being revealed. Let me see it — the face shining, the clothes brilliant white, the voice from the cloud. And then touch me as Jesus touched Peter, James, and John: Get up. Do not be afraid. Let me descend with what I have seen and bring it to the valley below. Amen.

Tabor Ministry

The Word of God Ministry preaches the Word of God. Total surrender to God is given prominence during the sessions. People are reminded of the loving promises in the Bible. One such promise is: “Bow down, then, before the power of God now, so that He may raise you up in due time; unload all your burden on to Him, since He is concerned about you.” (1 Pet 5:6–7).

Perpetual Adoration and the Ministry of Intercession have always been vibrant and continue to be so. We invite men and women from all sections to voluntarily become prayer warriors in the Tabor Ministry.
