About Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi

Built immediately after the canonisation of St. Francis in 1228, this magnificent double basilica houses his tomb in its crypt and contains some of the most important medieval fresco cycles in the world, painted by Cimabue and Giotto. Assisi is one of the great pilgrimage destinations of Christianity, its atmosphere of peace and simplicity reflecting the spirit of its founder.
