Must See
Apparition Hill (Podbrdo)
Hillside above the village [OUTDOOR] The rocky hill where the six visionaries first encountered the apparition on June 24, 1981. Pilgrims climb on bare feet over sharp limestone rocks. The path is lit by solar lights at night. A bronze statue of the Virgin marks the site of the first apparition. The view over the village and valley from the summit is what stays in memory. Cross Mountain (Križevac)
Behind the village [OUTDOOR] A steeper, rougher climb of about 45 minutes, with fourteen bronze Stations of the Cross by sculptor Carmelo Puzzolo. The 8.5-metre concrete cross at the top has been struck by lightning seven times without damage. At night, pilgrims carry candles up the dark path. It is one of the most powerful acts of penance in contemporary Catholic pilgrimage.
St James Parish Church
Centre of the village The plain parish church at the heart of Medjugorje where the evening programme takes place. The confessionals in the grounds surrounding the church operate for hours every day
one of the defining features of Medjugorje is the queue for confession, which never seems to end.
The Outdoor Altar Area
Behind St James Church In summer the outdoor Mass area behind the church fills with tens of thousands of pilgrims each evening. The sound of the rosary in multiple languages, followed by Mass under the Herzegovinian stars, is the experience that defines what Medjugorje is.
The Blue Cross
Base of Apparition Hill The small blue cross near the base of Apparition Hill marks the place where one of the visionaries received early messages. Pilgrims often begin and end their climb here in prayer.
Intentions
Carry these intentions into the Basilica with you — pause at each sacred spot and lift them to God.
For peace — the most repeated message of Medjugorje: Go in peace, reconcile yourself with God
For the conversion of hearts that have grown cold or hardened
For those waiting for Church approval of their spiritual experiences
For unity within families torn apart by conflict, addiction, or indifference
For the visionaries who have carried this burden for over forty years
For the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who have known terrible suffering
For those in the confessional who have waited a long time to return to God
For those who are sceptical — that they may ask honestly and receive honestly
Reflection
Whatever the final judgment of the Church on Medjugorje's supernatural claims, the human testimony is overwhelming: hundreds of thousands of people say they came here cold and left warm, came here faithless and found faith, came here burdened and went home lighter. The God who works in seven sacraments and a thousand other ways is not limited to working only in approved apparitions. Where people kneel in sincerity, God is near.
Suggested Scripture — Luke 15:20
But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

Our Lady of Medjugorje, whether these visions are of heaven or of the believing heart — the longing that brought me here is real. My need for reconciliation is real. My hope that God is near is real. Let this place, with its rocky hills and its endless confessionals and its evening rosary under the stars, become the place where I turn around. Amen.
More
Medjugorje is the most contested pilgrimage site in modern Catholicism — and one of the most popular. Since June 24, 1981, six young people from the village (Ivanka, Mirjana, Vicka, Ivan, Marija and Jakov) claim to have received daily apparitions of the Virgin Mary.
The Church's Position
The Catholic Church has not yet given official approval to the apparitions, though in 2024 the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a positive declaration on the spiritual fruits of Medjugorje while leaving the question of the supernatural origin of the apparitions open. Despite ongoing theological caution, Medjugorje has become one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Europe, drawing between one and two million pilgrims annually from over 60 countries.
The Spiritual Experience
The quality of conversion testimony is extraordinary: hundreds of thousands of people report life-changing encounters with faith at Medjugorje — in the confessionals that operate throughout the day, in the outdoor Masses on summer evenings, in the climb up Apparition Hill at dusk. The pilgrimage is centred on two hills: Apparition Hill (Podbrdo), where the first apparitions occurred, and Cross Mountain (Križevac), where a concrete cross was erected in 1933 — seven decades before the apparitions began.
Each evening, pilgrims climb both hills barefoot, in penance, on rocky paths that cut into the feet. Fourteen Stations of the Cross line the path up Križevac. The evenings at Medjugorje, with outdoor rosary, confession and Mass under the Herzegovinian sky, are the spiritual experience that draws people back year after year.
