On May 13, 1917, three shepherd children — Lúcia, Francisco, and Jacinta — witnessed the first of six apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the Cova da Iria. The third apparition on October 13 was accompanied by the Miracle of the Sun, witnessed by approximately 70,000 people. Fátima is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world.
